If you have oily skin, you know it. You have a tendency to break out with pimples and blackheads. You have shiny patches on your face and spend a fortune on powder to tone them down. You try all kinds of harsh products guaranteed to help your oily skin and prevent breakouts, only to find out these products cause more problems. So what is a woman with oily skin to do?
The very first thing you need to do is relax! Studies have shown that stress causes acne and breakouts. It is not easy to minimize stress in our busy lives, but do what you can. You would be surprised how little changes, like getting enough sleep, getting a massage once a week, taking a daily walk or talking on the phone to someone who makes you laugh will help you relieve stress.

The next thing to do is start a good skin care routine and follow it religiously. Incorporate this routine into your life and your skin will thank you by behaving. You need to cleanse, tone, exfoliate and moisturize that oily skin to get the best results.
Cleansing is the single most important step in taking care of skin. It needs to be done twice a day, and never, never go to bed with your makeup on, no matter how tired you are. Cleansing reduces bacteria on your face and keeps pores open. Use a gentle cleanser, and never use soap. Soap will dry out your skin. Always wash your hands before beginning your cleansing routine. Cleansers are actually comprised of three parts, oil, water and surfactants. Each of these components has a job. The oil in the cleanser dissolves oil on the surface of your face. The surfactants dissolve everything else such as dirt and makeup, and the water washes it all away.

Start by lathering the cleanser in your hands. Then, massage it gently on your face for a minute or so. Rinse several times to remove all traces of dirt and any leftover cleanser.
Toner is basically used to make our pores contract. This makes them smaller and less likely to produce oil. Toners cool the skin, which is a refreshing sensation. Toners come in a wide variety, from fresheners, toners, clarifyers and astringents. Fresheners are the mildest, and astringents are the strongest. Start with a mild freshener and advance down the line until you get the results you are comfortable with. Most women do not need to use astringents, however, these are usually reserved for teenagers in the throes of puberty.
Exfoliating should only be done once a week, after cleansing and before toning. Every three weeks, our skin renews itself by replacing the dead surface cells with new, translucent ones. These dead cells are what make our skin look dull and also cause blackheads. So, once a week, it makes sense to help this process along by removing those old cells. Exfoliants can be gentle or harsh, so choose one in the middle with oatmeal or some other exfoliant, and avoid the ones with things like crushed walnut shells in them.
The last step is to moisturize. This is important, even for oily skin. Moisturizing strengthens skin and protects it against moisture loss. Skin without moisture looks old! Nobody wants to look old, so choose a moisturizer with humectants, which attract moisture. Humectants are things like vitamin E and Panthenol. For oily skin, choose a light moisturizer that is oil-free, so you don't put any additional oil on your face. Always wet your face first, it aids in absorption. A good weather tip is to put your moisturizer in the fridge in the summer months for a refreshing, cool feeling when you apply it, and in the winter months, warm it in your hands before applying.
Finally, a few last tips to help keep that oily skin in check. First, drink lots of water. It lubricates the skin and helps skin to behave. Use sun protection, at least SPF 15 or more that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Choose a light or sheer sunscreen; many are made for oily skin. Avoid oil-based cosmetics. They add more oil to your skin and aggravate any problems you already have.
Remember, your skin type is determined by genetics and affected by hormones. So thank your mom for your oily skin and spend an afternoon a week doing something you really enjoy.

Facial care tips

Never go to bed with your make-up on. Make-up that is left on overnight clogs the pores and prevents the skin cells from shedding, which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. The skin needs to breathe over night. Waterproof make-up is most easily removed with a gel cleanser. The most important thing that you can do for your facial skin is to avoid sunlight or use liberal amounts of sunscreen. Sunlight causes the skin to age and causes skin cancer which is the most common malignancy in humans. The most common location for these tumors is the face. If you do not believe that the sun ages your skin, then look at the skin under your upper arm and compare it to the skin on your face and the back of the hands. Alpha hydroxy acid applied daily will help prevent acne out breaks if you have acne prone skin. If you have acne and the above measures do not help, see your dermatologist. There are many prescription treatments for acne.

Face care routine

Cleansing - Women who wear make-up should carry out a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturing each evening, as well as washing the face in the morning. Cleansing will remove old make-up and the grime and grease that have been accumulated during the day. Remove mascara with a cotton bud dipped in eye-dipped in eye-cleansing lotion. To make the job easier keep your hair off your face. Remove the eyeshadow by gently wiping it off with a pad of clean cotton wool moistened with eye-cleansing lotion. Pour a little face cleansing cream into the palm of one hand and dab it generously over the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks---using two fingers of the other hand. Massage the cream into the skin, starting under the throat, using a gentle upward motion. Continue massaging the cream up to the forehead, using the fingertips. Gently massage the cream from the eyes to the nose. Massage cream back over the chin, which is particularly prone to blackheads. Use the index finger. Remove the cream from the face with tissue pads in each hand. Start under the chin and work over the cheeks and on to the forehead
Toning - Toners remove all traces of dirt, make-up or cleanser that remain after cleansing. Immediately after cleansing apply toner to the forehead and cheeks on a pad of corron wool. Apply the toner to the crevices around the nose. Apply the toner to the crevices around the chin.
Moisturing - Without moisture, the skin will not remain smooth and supple. The face is exposed to the drying effect of the weather, so moisturisers -- which form a film over the skin -- contain and augment the natural moisture. Using the tips ofthe fingers, dot moisturising cream lightly all over the face. Press the fingers of both hands into the centre of the forehead and work the cream slowly outwards. Pat the cream gentlyaround the eyes. Work the cream around the jawline, chin and mouth with the middle fingers of both hands. Massage the cream over the throat with alternating hands, using upward strokes from collar-bone to chin

Morning facial care

In the morning you should clean your face with luke-warm water and a creamy cleanser or purifying gel wash. Avoid bar soap because this strips the natural moisturizing factors from the skin, leaving it feeling very tight and dry. Do not rub the skin dry. Instead, blot it gently with a towel. Your morning facial care can be done in the shower or at the sink. Next, you should tone the skin on the face. Toning the skin helps remove any residual cleanser or make-up that may have been left behind. A toner also helps restore the natural pH level of the skin, leaves your skin clean, clear and ready to be hydrated. Next, apply a moisturizer. This should be specialized to your skin type. A moisturizer leaves the skin feeling softer and smoother. It also helps smooth away fine lines and dryness. A sunscreen can be applied on top of the moisturizer. Next, apply your make-up (if you choose to wear make-up). Your foundation should match your skin tone. Never use a darker foundation than your skin tone; it should look natural.

Evening facial care

The evening starts like the morning. First, you should clean your face with luke-warm water and a creamy cleanser or purifying gel wash. These skin cleansers will remove your make-up at the same time you wash your face. A toner should then be applied. Any trace of make-up remaining will be removed (the easiest way of applying a toner is to put it on a cotton pad). Now, while your face is still wet, you should exfoliate. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells, which cause the face to look dull. The build up of dead cells can also contribute to blockage of the pores causing acne. Also this build up of dead cells will not let the products you are using penetrate the skin and work to their full capacity. Exfoliating will brighten the skin and give it a more healthy glow. Massage gently and rinse well. This can be done every night or 1-2 times a week all depending on the type of exfoliant. Finally, apply a moisturizer to your face, which is specified for your skin type. A firming eye cream should also be used around the eye area.
